Glass splashbacks are a modern and hygenic alternative to traditional tiles. There are many practical benefits to using glass in your kitchen design, however there are even more design benefits.
At Ember Glass we believe that a kitchen is the heart of the home. So why not lavish some design attention on the most important room in the house?
We create completely bespoke glass products, and when we say completely we mean it ! Any size, finish, colour, pattern or image! With this amount of choices, it may seem hard to know where to begin. This guide will hopefully help with this process, however we are only a phone call away if you have any questions.
Glass in Modern Kitchens
Glass is the obvious choice for modern kitchens, clean, seamless and available in any colour or finish.
Aesthetically, a glass splashbacks clean lines and simple design allow for the kitchens units to sing. Recent kitchen trends for two-tone units (pictured) require a simple backdrop to compliment the design. Tiles with their grout lines and sealents simply complicate the look, not to mention their ongoing maintenance.
As can be seen, glass splashbacks can be shaped around obstacles such as plug sockets and cooker hoods. Shaping is seamless with no splits necessary. This is known as 'cut outs/notches' on our splashback ordering tool. Using this kitchen as an example, the owner had 3 plug sockets that required shaping. However two of the sockets were side by side and therefore only count as one. They simply select 2 cut outs from the drop down menu. Once the order is processed, a member of our team will get in touch to help work out the location of the cut outs. Sometimes it is necessary to make a paper template, but don't worry we can talk you through this process!
The finished splashback looks sleek and modern, complimenting this kitchens streamlined design.
Glass in Contemporary kitchens
Glass splashbacks are not limited to modern kitchens, splashbacks can be designed to suit any style of kitchen.
Contemporary kitchen trends only reflect two types of wall finish, metro brick tiles or glass splashbacks. We believe glass splashbacks provide more choice than traditional tiles, as it is possible to have any colour as opposed to a limited range in tiles.
We colour-match any colour! That means if your ideal colour inspired by a new pair of silk M&S pants you've just bought, we can match it! Simply however over a colour to see the name, or click to see the colour appear on our splashback simulator. Colour possibilities are endless as we can source colours from any large branded paint manufacturer including Designers Guild, Sanderson and Little Green. Contact us with the paint brand, and the name and we'll create a splashback to match. It really is that simple!
Glass in Traditional Kitchens
Glass splashbacks work equally as well in wooden or traditional kitchens. Choosing the right colour and finish is important, as the right shade can really bring out wood tones. Up-stands are becoming increasingly popular in traditional and contemporary kitchens. Typically made from stone or composite they are designed to replace a wallcovering by covering part of the area that may be exposed to splashing. These work well, but still leave the area behind the cooker exposed.
A simple glass splashback can be made to fit between upstands and cupboards. This solution can bring some colour, leaving the option of painting the walls either side. Alternatively, if your worktop has already been fitted, it is possible to create glass upstands to match your cooker splashback. One advantage of opting for glass upstands is the opportunity to decide what height to make them. We recommend tall enough to catch splashes, but low enough to miss plug sockets (and the costs asociated with making 'cut outs'). As can be seen in our photograph 10-15cm tall usually works well.

This client wanted something with an Art Deco influence to add to their newly designed kitchen. Part of a large family room space, the client wanted to incorporate some of the colours in the rooms furnishings, they close three RAL colours from our colour picking tool. They contacted us with a 'vector' they had found online, and we set about designing their splashback. Our design team provided the client with a proof which included the vector to scale, with the colours chosen.
A vector is a large format image that can be scaled without losing quality. You can find vectors on any 'stock image' site. If you would like to know more about creating a custom splashback like this, why not contact us?
